According to decades of work and research by international organisational authority Dr David Kantor, every organisation operates primarily on one of three clearly recognisable sets of rules, or Operating Systems.
This led him to create “Structural Dynamics”, a systematic method of dramatically improving face-to-face communication. Here at Houston Exchange, we use Dialogue and Structural Dynamics as a powerful framework to help organisations understand and optimise their communications in 3 key areas:
- Actions – the behavioural stances we take in interactions with others.
- Communication Domains – the language we use when interacting with each other.
- Operating Systems – the rules governing the language we use and the actions we take when interacting with each other.
Every individual develops their own distinctive patterns of behaviour using combinations of the behavioural propensities listed above. Everyone is different and it this difference that creates communication problems. This will always have an effect on your organisation’s culture, performance and financial bottom line. The nature of those effects comes down to how well these factors are understood, communicated and harnessed productively.
Knowing your organisation’s operating system and the individual conversation modes you and your people are using gives you greater insight that enables you to have powerful conversations that uncover issues, get fresh, new ideas on the table, establish genuine agreement and commitment, and get things done.
We’ve created a simple, quick and free tool that will give you a snapshot of your team’s “operating system”. This short exercise will provide you with some insights into what dynamic is being created within your team and what this might mean for leadership behaviour and the performance and well being of the team.
